Automatic emergency braking (AEB) continues to improve as it cuts rear-end crashes in half, according to the latest study by the Partnership for Analytics Research in Traffic Safety (PARTS). The study, pairing auto manufacturer equipment with police crash report data covering 98 million vehicles and 21.2 million crashes, is the largest and most comprehensive study of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to date.

MITRE today announced that it will use its new compute capabilities, powered by an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD™, to train three new artificial intelligence (AI) foundation models for applications to critical government missions. Named the MITRE Federal AI Sandbox, this supercomputer will help train and deploy advanced AI models in critical infrastructure cybersecurity, weather modeling, and sustainable social services.

MITRE licensed its HAZMAT Auxiliary Unit (HAU) drone technology to Detectix, a provider of hazmat data collection solutions. MITRE and AeroParagon have established a licensing agreement to integrate MITRE’s CARPE Dronvm smartphone app into AeroParagon’s product suite. CARPE Dronvm, developed in collaboration with U.S. Air Forces Central (AFCENT), empowers military personnel and first responders to rapidly identify and report suspicious drone activity. AeroParagon is productizing the technology to enhance both Department of Defense operations and commercial critical infrastructure security.

Dr. Stephen Ondra has been named vice president, Center for Transforming Health, and director of the CMS Alliance to Modernize Health Care (Health FFRDC). Ondra joined MITRE in 2022 and previously served as chief medical adviser and an acting managing director of the Health FFRDC. He has served in numerous leadership roles throughout the healthcare ecosystem, including neurosurgeon, hospital and healthcare insurance executive, policy adviser, entrepreneur, and educator.

With a shared commitment to safeguard the transatlantic community, MITRE announced a new partnership with the Atlantic Council. Together, the two organizations are developing research and events that foster understanding of the current threat environment and new approaches to some of the world’s toughest security and civil challenges.

MITRE announced today that Mark Peters, Ph.D., will become the company’s 10th president and chief executive officer effective Sept. 3, 2024. He will succeed Jason Providakes, Ph.D., who previously announced his intention to retire after 37 years with the not-for-profit research and development (R&D) company and seven years as president and CEO.

MITRE Engenuity ATT&CK® Evaluations (ATT&CK Evals) released its second round of independent ATT&CK Evaluations for managed security services providers (MSSP). Through the lens of the MITRE ATT&CK knowledge base, this round of ATT&CK Evals focused on adversary behavior informed by menuPass (G0045), a Chinese-based threat group, and an ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware affiliate.

The EMB3D Threat Model is now publicly available at https://emb3d.mitre.org. The model provides a cultivated knowledge base of cyber threats to embedded devices, providing a common understanding of these threats with the security mechanisms required to mitigate them. The model is the result of a collaborative effort by MITRE, Niyo Little Thunder Pearson, Red Balloon Security, and Narf Industries.

MITRE is building a new capability intended to give its artificial intelligence (AI) researchers and developers access to a massive increase in computing power. The new capability, MITRE Federal AI Sandbox, will provide better experimentation of next generation AI-enabled applications for the federal government. The Federal AI Sandbox is expected to be operational by year’s end and will be powered by an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD™ that enables accelerated infrastructure scale and performance for AI enterprise work and machine learning.

MITRE’s 2024 Embedded Capture the Flag™ (eCTF) competition concluded this past week, marked by an awards ceremony held at JFK Library. The awards ceremony, sponsored by Fortinet, provided an opportunity for the top student competitors to share their accomplishments, meet participants from other schools, and interact with MITRE and eCTF partners and sponsors.

With MITRE ATT&CK®—an open-source knowledge base of adversary techniques—as its backbone, MITRE Caldera™ allows cyber defenders to attack and test their own computer networks and systems at the same level as real-world hackers and cyberattacks. Today, Caldera launched its latest version, which delivers a new user interface to enhance current live operation views of its adversarial emulations. The new version also lays the groundwork for future capabilities simulating threats using artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomy.

The Federal 100 awards recognize leaders from private industry, academia, and government who show how government can better leverage technology to serve its citizens. Under Barsoum’s leadership, his team elevates mission impact for the federal government by working on the toughest challenges across the homeland security and cybersecurity enterprise.

As noted in the intelligence community’s 2023 annual threat assessment, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is strategically posturing to be able to execute a sustained, widespread attack against U.S. critical infrastructure by 2027, if called on by their leader.

MITRE Engenuity opened its call for participation in ATT&CK® Evaluations, an independent and objective assessment of enterprise cybersecurity solutions. This sixth round of evaluations will examine common behaviors that are prevalent across prolific ransomware campaigns and feature an introduction into macOS, specifically focusing on macOS targeting by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

MITRE and the Midland Development Corporation (MDC), the economic development organization for Midland, Texas, signed an agreement to work together to accelerate their common vision for commercial space and high-speed flight operations in the United States. MDC and MITRE will cooperate on research and development projects and operational demonstrations that are of critical importance to enabling commercial space and high-speed flight operations at Midland International Air and Space Port.

To further support access to global health services, the Swinfen Charitable Trust, UVA Health, Telemedicine AI, and MITRE announced a new collaboration to enable medical cyber infrastructure protection assessments and testing for Swinfen’s next-generation telemedicine platform, OpenTelemed. Our nation’s critical infrastructure depends on embedded devices across industries such as oil and natural gas, electric, water management, automotive, medical, satellite, autonomous systems, and unmanned aircraft systems. However, these devices often lack proper security controls and are insufficiently tested for vulnerabilities. Sophisticated cyber adversaries increasingly attempt to exploit these devices, as evidenced by a growing number of CISA ICS advisories identifying significant threats to many life- and safety-critical devices. The EMB3D™ Threat Model, a collaborative effort by MITRE, Niyo Little Thunder Pearson (ONEGas, Inc.), Red Balloon Security, and Narf Industries, provides a common understanding of the threats posed to embedded devices and the security mechanisms required to mitigate them.

MITRE, the independent trusted third party for the Medical Device Information Analysis and Sharing (MDIAS) Public Private Partnership (PPP), today announced the addition of Atrium Health. The Charlotte-based health system is joining the voluntary MDIAS collaboration between the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and stakeholders across the private sector—including patients, hospital providers, and medical device manufacturers—to proactively analyze medical device-related data to improve health care outcomes for consumers.

The MITRE-Gallup State of Food Waste in America (SFWA) survey reveals new data and trends gathered from more than 9,000 households nationally. The 50-state survey of U.S. households includes user-reported data of daily food waste to investigate how much edible food is being tossed out and why. On average, American households are throwing away 6.2 cups of food per week, with leftover waste/spoilage and overreliance on date labels identified as two of the primary contributors to this waste.

MITRE and Microsoft have added a data-driven generative AI focus to MITRE ATLAS™, a community knowledge base that security professionals, AI developers, and AI operators can use as they protect artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled systems. This new framework update and associated new case studies directly address unique vulnerabilities of systems that incorporate generative AI and large language models (LLM) like ChatGPT and Bard.

The Honorable Susan M. Gordon, former principal deputy director of national intelligence, was elected vice chairwoman. Retired General Richard D. MITRE announced a new five-year contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to operate the CMS Alliance to Modernize Healthcare, a federally funded research and development center, more commonly known as the Health FFRDC.

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced yesterday the first set of awards under the CHIPS Act totaling nearly $240 million to build eight regional innovation hubs through its Microelectronics Commons initiative. MITRE and its tech foundation MITRE Engenuity have been strong proponents of the U.S. government’s efforts to strengthen the domestic semiconductor industry and establish the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) through the CHIPS Act.

MITRE’s Charles Clancy, Ph.D., was named chief technology officer in addition to his role as senior vice president and general manager of MITRE Labs. He assumes management of the MITRE independent research and development (IR&D) program. Across these integrated responsibilities, Clancy leads MITRE’s science, technology, and engineering workforce, the IR&D program, and extramural research activities. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has dominated much of the public conversation about technology following the release of tools like ChatGPT and Jasper Chat. In our second MITRE-Harris Poll survey on AI trends, conducted in July 2023, we found that aspects of public trust in AI technologies has declined compared to our previous poll, which was conducted in November 2022.

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of MITRE ATT&CK®, ATT&CKcon 4.0 will help users leverage the cybersecurity framework and level up their threat-informed defense, while also providing time to build personal connections with other cyber defenders and the MITRE ATT&CK team.

The data we’re encrypting online today—from financial and personal identification information to military operations and intelligence data—could be quickly decrypted in the future by an adversary with access to a cryptographically relevant quantum computer. To drive progress toward broader understanding and public adoption of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and the National Institute of Science and Technology’s (NIST) PQC algorithms, a community of technologists, researchers, and expert practitioners launched the PQC Coalition. Founding coalition members include IBM Quantum, Microsoft, MITRE, PQShield, SandboxAQ, and University of Waterloo.

MITRE Caldera™ for OT is now publicly available as an extension to the open-source Caldera platform, allowing security teams to run automated adversary emulation exercises that are specifically focused on threats to operational technology (OT).

MITRE has named Deborah Youmans as its new chief information officer (CIO). Youmans will oversee more than 400 IT professionals in MITRE’s Enterprise Computing and Information Systems division in areas including innovation and experimentation, information security, enterprise information technology, business and knowledge services, and sector operations.

As a pioneer of drone technology and applications for more than 20 years, MITRE opened a new facility dedicated to small uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS). Located in Orange, Va., the site serves as a proving ground for MITRE’s technologists and U.S. government sponsors to develop, test, and evaluate the newest technological advances for commercial robotics, autonomous systems, drones, and counter-drone systems.

MITRE is collaborating with Robust Intelligence, an AI solutions provider, to enhance a free tool to help organizations assess the supply chain risks of publicly available artificial intelligence (AI) models online today. The collaboration also includes work with Indiana University to develop automated risk assessment tools.

MITRE promoted Kevin Toner to vice president, Center for Government Effectiveness and Modernization (CGEM). Toner will lead MITRE’s support of the nation’s civil agencies through the Center for Enterprise Modernization (CEM), the federally funded research and development center sponsored by the Department of Treasury, the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, and the Department of Commerce. He will direct the existing work programs and support emerging technologies in big data analytics, cloud computing, cybersecurity, human-machine interfaces, and autonomy.

MITRE promoted Laurie Giandomenico, Ph.D., to Senior Vice President, Chief Acceleration Officer, with responsibility for investing and incubating new short- and long-term opportunities while also developing new business models to scale impact through MITRE Engenuity™, a tech foundation for public good. She will continue to incubate innovations and new capabilities through the MITRE Accelerator in collaboration with MITRE Labs. Exemplifying MITRE’s whole-of-nation approach, she connects government, industry, and academia to deliver innovation for public good.

The National Science Foundation awarded a $20 million grant to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to create the AI Institute for Societal Decision Making (AI-SDM). MITRE will be a member of the CMU-led multidisciplinary research coalition, which will improve our response to societal challenges such as disaster management and public health by creating human-centric AI tools to assist with critical decisions. The AI-SDM will also develop interdisciplinary training to bolster effective and rapid response in uncertain and dynamic situations.

How do we ensure the reliability of key community services such as clean water and consistent power? Cyber vulnerabilities and weaknesses are everywhere within critical infrastructure, but which vulnerabilities must be mitigated first? At RSA 2023, MITRE is showcasing its Infrastructure Susceptibility Analysis (ISA) to identify and prioritize mitigations by looking at how adversaries compromise infrastructure and what is needed to stop them. MITRE also is launching its MITRE CalderaTM for OT tool, which allows security teams to run automated adversary emulation exercises that are specifically targeted against operational technology (OT).

The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) released its highly anticipated “Blueprint for Trustworthy AI Implementation Guidance and Assurance for Healthcare” (Blueprint). The Blueprint addresses the quickly evolving landscape of health AI tools by outlining specific recommendations to increase trustworthiness within the healthcare community, ensure high-quality care, and meet healthcare needs. The 24-page guide reflects a unified effort among subject matter experts from leading academic medical centers and the healthcare, technology, and other industry sectors, who collaborated under the observation of several federal agencies over the past year.

MITRE debuted its System of Trust™ risk model manager and a community engagement group comprising 30 members. Expanding from its free and open platform, System of Trust now delivers a collaborative community to identify and mitigate threats to supply chains—before they happen. Leveraging the expertise of researchers and organizations, the community will further develop the framework’s body of knowledge and enhance supply chain security.

A “complete reimagination of the way we address mental health among our young people” is needed in the United States. The not-for-profit MITRE outlined a 14-point strategic vision and systematic approach that builds upon the efforts of federal agencies, states, and localities, as well as a broad range of investments in new and current programs, to address the country’s mental health crisis among our children and youth.

MITRE has named Stephanie Turner to the new role of Vice President, Diversity and Chief Sustainability Officer. This is an expansion of Turner’s current responsibilities for Inclusion, Diversity, and Social Innovation (IDS) that will allow the company to integrate and scale its sustainability and IDS efforts. This expanded position will also embed accountability across policies, practices, governance, and leadership performance.

Microsoft and MITRE have developed a plug-in that combines several open-source software tools to help cybersecurity professionals better prepare for attacks on machine learning (ML) systems.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), in partnership with the Homeland Security Systems Engineering and Development Institute™ (HSSEDI), has released Decider, a tool for mapping adversary behavior to the MITRE ATT&CK® framework. HSSEDI is a federally funded research and development center that is managed and operated by MITRE for the Department of Homeland Security. HSSEDI worked with MITRE’s ATT&CK team to develop Decider.

While Americans rely on artificial intelligence (AI) to inform consumer choices – from movie recommendations to routine customer service inquiries – the MITRE-Harris Poll survey on AI trends finds that most Americans express reservations about AI for high-value applications such as autonomous vehicles, accessing government benefits, or healthcare. Moreover, only 48% believe AI is safe and secure, and 78% are very or somewhat concerned that AI can be used for malicious intent.

MITRE released the Cyber Resiliency Engineering Framework (CREF) NavigatorTM — a free, visualization tool that allows organizations to customize their cyber resiliency goals, objectives, techniques, as aligned with NIST SP 800-160, Volume 2 (Rev. 1), National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) publication on developing cyber-resilient systems.

MassChallenge, in partnership with MITRE, today announced a cohort of 10 startups participating in the MITRE Social Innovation Mentorship Program. The selected companies, all led by founders from under-represented backgrounds, impressed judges with their high-impact, innovative work. The startups’ solutions fit within the program’s five challenge areas, derived from MITRE’s horizon strategies: advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI), BlueTech, cybersecurity, and digital health.

A new MITRE-Harris Poll Survey on Patient Experience finds 52 percent of individuals in the United States feel their symptoms are “ignored, dismissed, or not believed” when seeking medical treatment. That number rises to 6-in-10 within the Hispanic community.

Microelectronic chips are found in a myriad of applications important in our everyday lives from electric vehicles and drones to Internet of Things and 5G to contactless payments. These applications and devices are vulnerable to malicious actors, much like software applications are vulnerable to cyber bad actors. We need a new generation of engineering professionals to address these vulnerabilities to keep us all safe.
