The smart #5[1] has been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating – with the highest overall score of any model tested in the large SUV category in 2025. This top-ranking performance reflects smart’s commitment to engineering vehicles where safety is not just a feature, but a core pillar of its product definition. The smart #5, a mid-size premium SUV, achieved high scores across all four main assessment areas: 93%in Child Occupant protection, 92% in Safety Assist, 84% in Vulnerable Road User protection, and 88% in Adult Occupant protection.

Strength at the core

The foundation of the smart #5’s five-star Euro NCAP rating is its passive safety: a steel–aluminum hybrid body, made up of 82% high-strength material, creates a rigid safety cage around its occupants. While high-strength materials in the A and B pillars are industry-standard, the #5 goes further, with full coverage of high-strength materials on the side doors and rear door opening area to ensure comprehensive occupant protection. In addition to its strong core, the #5 features seven airbags as an added layer of protection. This combination was pivotal to the model scoring high marks in the Child and Adult Occupant categories.

Family-focused protection

As a mid-size premium SUV, the #5 was designed with everyday family needs in mind. The cabin can accommodate up to three child seats across the rear and offers an additional ISOFIX anchor on the front passenger seat. Clear markings and broad compatibility with restraints for ages 0–10 make installation safe and easy. In dynamic testing, the #5 achieved a perfect protection result for rear child dummies, underscoring its ability to safeguard passengers of all ages.

The smart #5 also debuts Child Presence Detection (CPD), which uses 60GHz millimeter-wave radars in the front and rear seats to detect tiny movements. If a child or a pet is left locked inside, the system issues alerts, sends notifications, and can activate countermeasures such as lowering windows or starting air conditioning – therefore avoiding risk of suffocation.

Intelligent systems that anticipate risk

As the brand’s technology flagship, the smart #5 showcases smart’s commitment to Mindful Technology – innovation that isn’t just for show but serves a real-world purpose. Its intelligent systems are designed to reduce accident risks, protecting occupants in the car and other road users. One leading feature is smart Autonomous Emergency Braking, which earned a 97% Euro NCAP score. Powered by high-resolution cameras, next-generation radar and advanced AI, the system has been thoroughly validated across diverse road conditions. The #5 also features Emergency Lane Keep Assist, Driver Monitoring to detect fatigue or distraction, and a 360° camera system for all-round awareness. Together, these active safety technologies contributed to scores of 92% for Safety Assist and 84% for Vulnerable Road User protection in Euro NCAP testing.

Tested harder, validated further

Safety features are only as strong as their validation. The #5 underwent testing with more than 110 crash-test vehicles, 130 safety experiments and millions of kilometers of global road validation under Euro NCAP, C-NCAP, and C-IASI protocols. This scale of testing ensures safety systems perform not just in the lab, but in real-world driving scenarios.

Every model in smart’s current product lineup meets Euro NCAP’s highest standard

With the smart #5 joining the smart #1 and smart #3 in achieving five-star ratings, every model in smart’s current product lineup meets Euro NCAP’s highest standard. This consistency means that safety is not limited to one vehicle but is a defining trait of the brand.
